Australian Internet Censorship

Posted by Aegist on October 29th, 2008

In case you live in Australia and haven’t seen the headlines lately, there is a political movement attempting to create and implement a censor for the internet in Australia. Should this software be implemented, all internet access from Australia would be passed through the filter and any ‘illegal’ content would be blocked. This would be forced upon every Australian, and no option will be available to opt-out of the censorship. There will however be an option to opt-out of the secondary filter, which will block all X rated, and R rated information and images. Yay?

While it may sound simple enough - blocking out ‘illegal’ stuff can’t hurt anyone can it? - the consequences are far reaching. Firstly, it will slow all internet access in Australia, since there will be an extra step of processing through which every single request must pass through. Secondly and most importantly, once the filter is set up it will be easy to extend its reach to other undesirable topics. Not to mention the fact that the government has already spent millions of dollars researching this, and trying to find something that will do the job…

The important consequence with regards to Arbitrage, is that there are already calls to include ‘online overseas casinos’ in the filter, because they are technically illegal in Australia. So there is a chance that Australians will have access to bookmakers drastically reduced, and the few bookmakers we can reach will perform sluggishly because our internet has to be constantly checked by Big Brother for us.

Hooray for Freedom?

I am deeply troubled by this idea, and I hope all of you are too. The potential for abuse of this filter is overwhelming, and is a grave threat to all future freedom of expression.

Please take action, and follow one or more of the possible actions listed on the website over at NoCleanFeed.com. Sign the petition, mail the minister, email your ISP and complain about the proposition… make it known that Australians do not want to be controlled like citizens in other repressive regimes likes China or Iran…

For more information, read the Age article on the expansion of the filter. Better still, look through the website for Electronic Frontiers Australia to get the full story.

Ascot Sports Closing Down?

Posted by Aegist on May 11th, 2008

The Malaysian Insider has published an article about Ascot Sports closing down. I am yet to find any other sources on the topic, and it seems most other bookmaker news sources have taken their information directly from this one article. The only other source I have come across is word of mouth from a couple of arbitrage traders who have spoken to customer service representatives at Ascot sport. One stated that the rep they spoke to “claimed to know nothing about closure, and said withdrawals were possible”, while the other arber said “The guy I spoke to seemed to admit the news after I pressed him, but said he didn’t know what was gonna happen next.”

So it seems the report is reliable, and despite Ascot Sports website showing that they are “Performing a scheduled maintenance and enhancements” to their systems, they are in fact completely closed down. Withdrawals are still functioning from the website, although I have no word yet that money has definitely been received for payouts requested since the site closed up.

Hopefully all will go well with all withdrawal requests, and Ascot will take good care of all of its customers.

SureBetBookies Update - JuiceTrading completed, ArbExpert next

Posted by Aegist on May 9th, 2007

We have been working away on SureBetBookies tirelessly adding bookmakers every day for the past couple of weeks and we now have over 70 bookmakers in the database! Our goal is to maintain a minimum average of one new bookmaker added every day, and start knocking off complete lists of each specific alert service.

We have already added all of the most popular bookmakers. If you do a general search of SureBetBookies you will notice that virtually all of the bookmakers in there have more than 10 alert services which use them. Now that we are getting down into the bookmakers which are much less popular we will be targetting specific alert service lists in an effort to complete the bookmaker listings for each service.

To kick this process off, we have already completed our first alert service: Juice Trading, with a monster list of 10(!) bookmakers, was easily the first target for us to complete. (If JuiceTrading admin is watching this, you should update your list to acknowledge that WWTS has been acquired by Bodog, and thus no longer exists as a separate bookmaker) ArbExpert should follow sometime next week, then after that probably NickelVacuum, and then maybe SportsPunter.

I would like to take this opportunity also to thank the few people who have been providing feedback on the information presented at SureBetBookies. The SBB database will occasionally find itself out of date or with incomplete information due to our own inability to know everything about a bookmaker! So every time one of you, our visitors, clicks on that ‘Edit’ button or the ‘Comments’ link and provides some feedback to us about any innacuracies in our data, we REALLY really really appreciate it. Unfortunately we can’t actively use and experience every bookmaker online, and so some facts are simply out of our reach. If you see a question mark in any field, and you think you can provide some information on it, PLEASE tell us what you know!

Thank you all for your ongoing support, and I hope everyone really likes what SureBetBookies is offering everyone!

Oh, one more thing I just remembered! You can now register to receive email updates (usually weekly) on what bookmakers have been added to SureBetBookies. So if you are waiting for your favourite bookmaker to be added, or just want to stay informed on the amount of information available on SBB, then go to the homepage of SureBetBookies and enter your email in the registration box at the bottom of the news menu, and you will receive emails of every new news update released!

Thanks! Speak to you all again soon.

More Information On USA Gambling - Intertops Email

Posted by Aegist on April 23rd, 2007

I just got this email from Intertops. I thought it was worth posting.

Dear Intertops.com Customers,

The following email is being sent to you as a courtesy to the Antigua Online Gambling Association. Intertops.com has been licensed in Antigua and Barbuda for over 10 years - a Tier 1 jurisdiction of choice with first rate regulatory enforcement.

As you may be aware, online gambling has been under attack by the United States for the last decade. The Government of Antigua and Barbuda has successfully challenged the malicious prosecution of Antiguan operators in the World Trade Organization. The WTO has found that the US’s application of its laws against Antiguan entities is protectionist and in violation of the General Agreement on Trade in Services.

Now that Antigua has won the legal battle, it can use political support in Congress. Here’s how you can help. Please email and phone your representative in the House of Representatives and your two Senators. Remind them that the United States needs to abide by the decision in the Antigua-Gambling matter if it expects other countries to comply with WTO decisions in favor of the United States.

Here is a link to a letter to the USTR from Representative Ros-Lehtinen, the ranking Republican on the House Committee on Foreign Affairs:

http://www.antiguawto.com/LettertoUSTR.pdf

Rep. Ros-Lehtinen eloquently noted, “…our failure to resolve this dispute may harm our credibility as we seek to press countries like China regarding their violations on a range of issues, including intellectual property protection, subsidies, and currency manipulation.” She further warned, “In the event the United States fails to reach a satisfactory resolution of the Antigua dispute, it could provide China with an argument to ignore a WTO decision favorable to the United States.”

Please send the link above to your Representative and Senators. Ask them to send similar letters to the United States Trade Representative. Let them know you vote, you pay taxes, and you think the United States should comply with the decision in the Antigua-Gambling matter.

To contact your Representative and two Senators, follow the links below or call the Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and give them your zip code. Make sure you call three times.

http://www.house.gov/

http://www.senate.gov/

We will continue to fight the legal battle, please help us with the political fight.

Thank you,

Antigua Online Gambling Association & Intertops.com
