The End of Bonuses in Australian Bookmakers

Posted by Aegist on September 9th, 2009

Following up on the previous post about Australian bookmakers no longer being able to offer bonus incentives to player, Alberto from SportsAlive has been very helpful in finding a number of articles on the subject for me, so here they are:

Free Bet Ban for Western Australia – iGaming Business

Ban on Freebets – Herald Sun

Inducements to be Banned from Bet Ads – The Age

Online Betting Agencies Lure Gamblers with Freebets – The Courier Mail

I’ve already seen a few alternative bonuses and incentives come around. Offering increased payouts on multi-bets is one example. SportsAlive brought this up in their newsletter because they are offering increased odds as a new incentive – so every now and then they will pick a sport and offer higher than usual odds. This could be very useful for arbers, so keep an eye on that.

Bookmaker Updates

Posted by Aegist on September 7th, 2009

A few odds and ends on the bookmaker side of the news.

Australian Sportsbook Bonuses

According to a recent SportsAlive newsletter, recent Australian legislation has stopped bookmakers from being able to offer cash incentives for players. So apparently, there will be no more bonus money or freebets being offered by Australian books.

I have not yet been able to verify this information, but I will keep looking for information on it.

Ladbrokes Not Accepting AU Players

Ladbrokes has also been refusing players from Australia for some months now. They claim that it has to do with Australian law, but they are the only UK book to have taken this measure. Old Australian players are still free to keep betting there, but no new ones can register.

12Bet Limiting Bets

There has been a lot of discussion lately on the forum about 12bet reducing their bet limits. It seems all players have been reduced to a few hundred dollars maximum per bet.

Thats all for now. Don’t forget to take advantage of the SureBetBookies database whenever you are trying to find out about sportsbook bet rules, deposit methods, or ratings. And if you are opening new sportsbooks, using the SBB bookmaker links is the best way to support SAG.

Australian Internet Censorship

Posted by Aegist on October 29th, 2008

In case you live in Australia and haven’t seen the headlines lately, there is a political movement attempting to create and implement a censor for the internet in Australia. Should this software be implemented, all internet access from Australia would be passed through the filter and any ‘illegal’ content would be blocked. This would be forced upon every Australian, and no option will be available to opt-out of the censorship. There will however be an option to opt-out of the secondary filter, which will block all X rated, and R rated information and images. Yay?

While it may sound simple enough – blocking out ‘illegal’ stuff can’t hurt anyone can it? – the consequences are far reaching. Firstly, it will slow all internet access in Australia, since there will be an extra step of processing through which every single request must pass through. Secondly and most importantly, once the filter is set up it will be easy to extend its reach to other undesirable topics. Not to mention the fact that the government has already spent millions of dollars researching this, and trying to find something that will do the job…

The important consequence with regards to Arbitrage, is that there are already calls to include ‘online overseas casinos’ in the filter, because they are technically illegal in Australia. So there is a chance that Australians will have access to bookmakers drastically reduced, and the few bookmakers we can reach will perform sluggishly because our internet has to be constantly checked by Big Brother for us.

Hooray for Freedom?

I am deeply troubled by this idea, and I hope all of you are too. The potential for abuse of this filter is overwhelming, and is a grave threat to all future freedom of expression.

Please take action, and follow one or more of the possible actions listed on the website over at NoCleanFeed.com. Sign the petition, mail the minister, email your ISP and complain about the proposition… make it known that Australians do not want to be controlled like citizens in other repressive regimes likes China or Iran…

For more information, read the Age article on the expansion of the filter. Better still, look through the website for Electronic Frontiers Australia to get the full story.

Ascot Sports Closing Down?

Posted by Aegist on May 11th, 2008

The Malaysian Insider has published an article about Ascot Sports closing down. I am yet to find any other sources on the topic, and it seems most other bookmaker news sources have taken their information directly from this one article. The only other source I have come across is word of mouth from a couple of arbitrage traders who have spoken to customer service representatives at Ascot sport. One stated that the rep they spoke to “claimed to know nothing about closure, and said withdrawals were possible”, while the other arber said “The guy I spoke to seemed to admit the news after I pressed him, but said he didn’t know what was gonna happen next.”

So it seems the report is reliable, and despite Ascot Sports website showing that they are “Performing a scheduled maintenance and enhancements” to their systems, they are in fact completely closed down. Withdrawals are still functioning from the website, although I have no word yet that money has definitely been received for payouts requested since the site closed up.

Hopefully all will go well with all withdrawal requests, and Ascot will take good care of all of its customers.
